You Might Finally Start Using Your Balcony After Reading This

Last updated on October 6th, 2026

Your balcony looked like such a lovely bonus when you first saw the house. Fast-forward a few months and it’s storing a drying rack, three empty planters, and a chair nobody sits on.

The problem may not be the size of your balcony. You simply haven’t given yourself a good enough reason to go out there. Instead of decorating it first, start by deciding what you actually want to do there.

1. Give Your Balcony One Proper Job

Purpose first, Pinterest later!

Morning coffee? Reading? Gardening? Evening drinks? Working outdoors? Pick the activity you’d genuinely enjoy.

Once you know the answer, furnishing becomes much easier. A reading balcony might need only one wonderfully comfortable chair and a tiny side table. If you love entertaining, seating becomes the priority. Gardening enthusiast? Give the plants most of the real estate.

Trying to make a tiny balcony do everything is often how it ends up doing nothing particularly well.

2. Don’t Automatically Buy Tiny Furniture

Small balcony doesn’t mean dollhouse furniture!

Yes, scale matters. But squeezing two uncomfortable miniature chairs onto a balcony simply because they fit isn’t much use if nobody wants to sit in them.

Choose the most comfortable furniture your available space can reasonably accommodate while preserving a clear walkway and allowing the balcony door to open properly. Folding or stackable pieces can help when you occasionally need extra room.

3. Design For The Weather You Actually Have

That sunny balcony can get very sunny!

Notice what happens outside before you start shopping. Does the balcony bake in afternoon sun? Get drenched during heavy rain? Catch strong winds?

Choose outdoor-suitable materials accordingly and add shade where necessary. On exposed high-rise balconies, lightweight furniture and unsecured accessories can be particularly impractical, so choose and secure items appropriately.

4. Make It Look Like Your Home

Outdoor doesn’t have to mean boring!

Your balcony doesn’t need to resemble a generic outdoor-furniture catalog.

Carry some of your indoor decorating personality outside. Love color? Try weather-suitable cushions or an outdoor rug. Prefer a quieter look? Keep the palette restrained and let greenery add interest. Even one beautiful chair or little bistro table can give the space character.

5. Give Everything Somewhere To Go

Because cushions need homes too!

Balconies can become clutter magnets surprisingly quickly, especially when gardening tools, watering cans, cleaning supplies, and cushions have nowhere to live.

Consider a weather-resistant storage bench, slim cabinet, basket, or storage spot immediately inside the balcony door. Keeping a cloth or cleaning supplies nearby also makes it easier to wipe down dusty furniture before sitting outside.

6. Add Plants Without Losing The Floor

Go green, then go vertical!

Plants can transform a bare balcony and give you a reason to step outside every day. But don’t sacrifice every inch of precious floor space to pots.

Try railing planters, wall-mounted options where safely installed, or hanging baskets where appropriate. Taller plants can also create a little privacy, provided pots and planters are stable and safely positioned.

And choose plants according to the sunlight your balcony actually receives, rather than the ones that looked prettiest at the nursery.

7. Make Evenings Worth Stepping Outside For

Don’t let sunset close your balcony!

If your balcony becomes a dark void after 7 p.m., you’re losing some of its best hours.

Soft outdoor-suitable lighting can make it far more inviting. Think wall lights, lantern-style fixtures, or safely installed outdoor-rated string lights rather than one glaring light overhead.

Add a comfortable chair and your previously forgotten balcony might suddenly become your favorite place to end the day.

The Real Balcony Upgrade

You don’t need a sprawling terrace to create an outdoor space you’ll love. You need a balcony designed around something you genuinely enjoy doing. Start with purpose, add comfortable furniture, account for the weather, find room for greenery and storage, and make it inviting after dark.
