Have A Dog? Get Your Home Guest Ready With These Easy Steps!

Last updated on May 14th, 2021

As pet parents, our eyes and noses are immune (for want of a better word) to the smells and sights of a house with a dog. But when guests enter our home, they are able to spot a lot of things that we otherwise wouldn’t.

Only if we try and look deliberately will we be able to figure out what our guests mean when they spot some stray dog-hair on the couch and aren’t so comfortable sitting on it.

Let’s look at a few ways we can get our home ready for those not-so-pet-friendly guests.

Fur, Fur Everywhere

Having had pet(s) for a while, you would have got used to a good amount of pet hair making its way into every space in your home that you can possibly think of.

To rid your home of all that fur, and to do it thoroughly, it’s a great idea to begin at the top and work your way to the bottom.

Start from the ceiling and any light fixtures it may have, and tackle the light pendants and sconces next. You don’t want fur to make its way to your guests’ plates. Next, use a lint roller or a vacuum cleaner on lampshades and the upholstery.

Aim for the bookshelves and side tables next along with the rest of your furniture. It’s a good idea to vacuum thoroughly, the spots on the furniture that are Fido’s favorite.

Finally, look at the corners near the floor which is where most of the dust bunnies and fur like to collect. You can vacuum these spaces as you usually do.

Smell Something Fishy?

If you want to get rid of smells that are a part of keeping a pet, you’ll first need to replace or wash all items that belong to your dog and that seem to have gotten smelly. And if the smell is emanating from your dog, it may be time for a visit to the groomers or a good scrub in the backyard.

If there are accidents in the house, you would want to clean the mess right away to prevent the odors from settling in. Use enzymatic cleaners as they are the most effective.

Last but definitely not the least, try adding pleasant smells to your house using scented candles and essential oil diffusers. You can also try boiling cinnamon sticks and leave them simmering for a while to neutralize odors and infuse your home with a fresh baking aroma.

There you have it. A spotless home ready for your sternest of guests. Did anyone hear the doorbell ring?
