6 Ways To Keep Your House Smelling Great All The Time

Last updated on June 9th, 2021

No matter how clean your house is, ‘everyday living’ that involves dealing with things like filled-up trash bins, pet bowls, smelly shoes, musty closets and grimy kitchen appliances (to name just a few), creates smells.
But not every house smells the same, and there are some that resemble a plush five-star facility in the way they smell. And if they make you wonder how they manage to do it, you’ve landed at the right place.

Read on to know how it’s done and how easily you can do it too!

1. Freshen up the trash bins

A garbage bin is home to a variety of unpleasant smells, which can often leave the surrounding areas with a lingering stench and washing the trash can often and changing the bin liners might not be enough to get rid of all those smells. An easy trick is to sprinkle baking soda under the bin liner and inside it, before you start using the bin. This will keep the bin and the areas around it, stench-free. Also, finishing it off with a disinfecting spray will help keep it fresh for even longer.

2. Clean out the sinks

Do you sometimes notice a smell in your kitchen that lingers? The culprit might be the drains in the sinks and there’s a rather simple way to clean them. Just pour boiling water down the drain, followed by a cup of baking soda and 1 cup of 1:1 water-vinegar solution. Let the mixture sit in the drain for 5-10 minutes before pouring boiling water into it again. And Voila! Clean kitchen sinks and a kitchen that smells pristine again.

3. Refresh rugs and pet beds

Carpets, rugs and pet beds in your home can absorb smells from the countless spills, and messes they’re exposed to regularly. The best way of getting rid of the smells is to sprinkle baking soda all over them and leave it to sit for a few hours, before vacuuming them.

4. Leave a few herbs simmering on the stove

This is a great trick to try when you’re having guests over at short notice. Just let citrus slices and herbs like cinnamon and lavender simmer in water on the stove and you’ll find the fragrant mix permeating every room of the house. And the best part? You can customize the smells as per your choice!

5. Fill your home with plants

Plants are a great way of beautifying your space and they come with the added bonus of purifying the air around them. Invest in plants like Jasmine, Eucalyptus, and Gardenias which don’t just look good, but also offer pleasant fragrances – for that uber-luxe smell at home. And it’s okay if you don’t have a green thumb. There are plenty of tutorials online that’ll tell you how to care for them.

6. Repurpose dryer sheets

Dryer sheets aren’t just meant for the dryer. Well, of course they are, but what’s stopping you from using them elsewhere? Plus, they’re available everywhere these days. Just get a box, place a few sheets in closets, dresser drawers and other small places in the house, and see how nice and fresh they leave all these spaces smelling for months together. And what do you do when they stop smelling as good? Just swap the old ones out with fresh ones.
