If there’s one design element that is currently having a moment, it has to be the gallery wall, and it’s not hard to see why. They are an amazing way to breathe life into a dull and boring wall. Most importantly, they provide us with an excellent opportunity to showcase who we are and what we like by giving the room a personality makeover. What’s more? lately, we are seeing more and more chic and pretty gallery walls popping up on Instagram and Pinterest feeds. But, with so many gallery wall ideas out there, if you are feeling overwhelmed, then let us show you a simple step-by-step way to create a stunning gallery wall in your home.
1. Look for Inspiration
Unless you have already curated and kept some wall art aside for your gallery wall – your first step towards creating a gallery wall is by selecting the right kind of art. And if you are a first-timer, then the process may seem somewhat intimidating. But don’t you worry, ‘coz we’ve got your back! For starters, you need to first identify your taste in art – look into Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration, but ultimately, let your heart decide what it wants. Look for prints, paintings, or even sculptures that work within your budget. Think of fusing personal elements, for instance, a painting made by your little one, or even a family photograph that you love.
2. Mix and Match
Don’t limit your gallery wall to just framed arts – think of including decorative plates, tapestries, framed mirrors, and all the things you love in art! This mix and match process not only allows you to give your gallery wall a touch of the unconventional but also provides personality and vitality to your home.
3. A Lesson in Layout
Now that you have all the art pieces in hand, you might find yourself stuck with the question – where to start from? Since every room has its own specificity, the way you display art in each room will vary from the other. So, before you jump onto the gallery wall bandwagon, you need to understand the type of gallery wall layout you are looking for.
For example, if you are looking for a classy and balanced look, then you can go in for the Grid Layout – a series of identical frames spaced out evenly. If you are trying to create a statement with your gallery wall on the other hand, then you can try the focal point layout – an oversized art placed in the center of the wall and surrounded by various smaller art pieces. If you’re looking for an eclectic gallery wall, then you can go for the inside-out approach – starting with art pieces arranged in a straight line, and spreading outwards.
4. Plan it Out
Before you get your nails and hammer out, you need to have a plan in hand. To begin with the installing process, you will require these key measurement details in hand:
The ideal height for art on a wall is 50” – 60”.
The ideal distance between each art should be around 3” – 6”.
The optimal distance between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the art should be 6” – 8”.
Now that you have these measurements, the next step to create a stunning gallery wall is by creating a mock-up of the same. You will require a single roll of craft paper to do this task. All you need to do is: trace each frame on the craft paper, marking the hangers on it. Cut out the mock-up frames and paste them onto your wall in a manner you like. Now, put the nails and hammer into use, and hang all those pretty frames!
Happy decorating, everyone!
