Life Hacks: 9 Ways to Take Good Care Of Your Mattress

Last updated on November 3rd, 2021

The mattress we sleep on every night is a big part of our lives. After all, we spend one-third of our time on it! And the amount of energy we have, to tackle what life decides to throw our way during the day, depends on how we spend our nights on it.

So, here are 9 ways to take care of your mattress to make sure it is able to take good care of you, in return!

1. Rotate Your Mattress Frequently

No matter what kind of mattress you use, experts advise that you rotate the mattress once a month. This will make sure your mattress doesn’t sag from constant use.

2. Use A Mattress Protector

Leaving the mattress bare under the sheets exposes it to moisture, dust, dirt, body oils, and dead cells, that tend to accumulate over time. It’s always a good idea to use a protective cover over the mattress and keep it hygienic. And wash the protector a few times each year to keep it looking clean and smelling fresh!

3. Don’t Jump Or Stand On The Bed

Be it your kids jumping on the bed, or others using the bed as a ladder to reach the shelves or the fan, it’s a bad idea either way as it can damage the mattress.

4. Add A Bed Skirt

Use a bed skirt to keep your mattress protected from pet hair and dust. (It is easily available online)

5. Keep Your Pets Off It

Difficult as it might be, it’s a good idea to keep Fido off your bed. Not only will he make it difficult for you to sleep through the night, but he will also leave behind hair and dander, which also tend to accumulate on the mattress over time.

6. Vacuum Your Mattress Regularly

No matter how clean your mattress looks, it might contain dust and mites, which aren’t visible to the naked eye. It’s always a good idea to vacuum it clean every few months to keep allergies at bay.

7. Ensure Proper Support Under The Mattress

It’s important to make sure that the bed that the mattress is resting on, is in good condition and isn’t causing any sagging in the mattress. If the support under the mattress isn’t firm, it won’t support your back the way it is meant to, giving rise to aches and pains.

8. Give It Fresh Air and Sunlight

We suggest you put the mattress under the sun once for each season to get rid of all living creatures who’ve made a home inside it!

9.  Handle Spills The Right Way

No matter how careful you are with your mattress, you cannot avoid accidental spills. And mattresses and liquids don’t go very well. In case you spill something over the mattress, remove the sheet immediately and soak up the liquid with the help of a dry towel or paper napkins after which you can use a mattress cleaner or just spray vinegar on the affected area, and blot it with a paper towel. Finally, just sprinkle some baking soda onto it to get rid of the stain and the smell.
