How Often Should You Clean Your Bathroom?

Last updated on November 3rd, 2021

Cleaning the bathroom doesn’t really evoke a happy feeling. But, the happiness that follows when you realize that you have a spotlessly clean bathroom, is extremely rewarding! But I am sure we’ve all wondered about how often should one clean the bathroom? Read on to know the answer!

Generally speaking, cleaning your bathroom weekly should be enough. But, there are a few zones in the bathroom that should be tended to more often than that. Let’s take a closer look.

The Toilet Bowl

How often should you clean it: Once or twice a week

We all know that the toilet is one of the dirtiest areas of the house. In fact, whenever you flush, the waste matter gets mixed with the water and releases plumes of microbes in the air, ultimately contaminating almost every surface in the bathroom (the seat, lid, sink – you name it!).

If you live alone, you can get by cleaning the toilet once a week. But if you have children in the house, the rules change. The outer area, the handle, and the seat should be wiped down with an antibacterial cleaner, once a day. To clean the toilet bowl you can use any commercial toilet cleaner, or stir up a homemade cleaner by mixing 3/4th cup borax, 1 cup white vinegar, a few drops of lavender, and lemon essential oil. Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle and spritz the solution on the toilet. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight (do not use the toilet in the meantime!). Finish with a good scrub using a brush and rinse it clean.

The Sink

How often should you clean it: Everyday

Regardless of how clean they look, sinks can be extremely gross, especially bathroom sinks that collect fecal matter. To keep the sink clean, wipe it with an all-purpose cleaner or an antibacterial cleaning wipe, every day.

Shower Curtains

How often should you clean them: Once a week

Whether cotton, synthetic, or vinyl, your shower curtains need to be tossed in the washing machine once a week. Use hot water and a mild detergent to get rid of all the dirt from the curtains and air dry them before putting them back on the channel. Bonus point: Always spread them out, when they aren’t in use so that the water doesn’t stick on the folds.

Bath Towels

How often should you clean them: Every two days

Well, if you are okay using the same towel for seven days, then let we’re here to tell you: it actually isn’t okay! That’s because they provide a perfect breeding ground for microbes like yeast, E-coli, and mold. So, remind yourself to replace all bath towels with fresh ones, every two days.

The Shower Area

How often should you clean it: Once a week

You need to clean the shower area and the tub once a week. Also, if you have a glass shower cubicle, then even the slightest traces of soap scum or mineral deposits can make it look gross. To clean your glass door, try this: Cut a lemon in half, dip it in baking soda and scrub it on the glass door to get rid of the stains.

The Mirror

How often should you clean it: Daily

Just like the sink, the mirror in your bathroom requires a daily clean-up as it collects dust, toothpaste, and soap specks. Clean it with a damp microfiber cloth every day.
