How to Clean Your Makeup Tools

Looking good is important to all of us, and we all take good care of our skin and beauty. But sometimes, with our busy schedules, we may forget a few important things like the cleaning and maintenance of our loyal companions – our makeup tools.

And not only do unclean makeup tools leave you looking less-than-perfect, they can give you a bad skin rash or infections from the bacteria hiding in them.
Here’s a quick read on how to clean and take good care of all your makeup tools.

1. Cleaning Your Makeup Sponge

Wet the sponge in warm water and use a few drops of a gentle shampoo and use your fingers to work all the foundation out of it. This might be take you a while if you haven’t washed your sponge in a long time. Rinse the sponge, wring it well and pat it dry with a towel, before allowing it to air dry.

2. Cleaning Your Curling And Flat Irons

Cleaning your curling and flat irons can be a little trickier as you can’t just dunk them in water to get the hair spray that has built-up on them from constant use. Even scraping it off isn’t an option as it can damage the surfaces.
Here’s how you can clean them. Ensure that the appliance is unplugged and cool. Mix a tablespoon of baking soda and a teaspoon of water and apply the paste all over the sticky areas with a soft cloth, scrubbing it gently. Wipe the gunk that comes off the surface with a clean wet cloth before drying it thoroughly with a soft cloth.

3. Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Rinse the bristles on your brushes with water streaming down. Use a gentle shampoo and wash the brushes well before rinsing them again with clean water.
Once you’ve cleaned the brushes, you will need to disinfect them. Mix a solution of 2-parts water and 1-part vinegar in a bowl, and dip the brushes and swirl them around for a minute, before rinsing them in clean water. Finally, press them dry with a towel and lay them flat on a it to help them dry completely.

4. Cleaning Your Makeup Pencil Sharpeners

All you need to do, to clean your sharpener, is to use an old toothbrush and dip it in some rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, and carefully clean the edges of the sharpener. Rinse well with water and let it dry.

5. Cleaning Your Hairbrushes

Remove as much hair from the brushes as you can, using a comb and your fingers. Soak the brushes in a bowl of water with a few drops of shampoo for 5 minutes. Take an unused toothbrush and give the brushes a good scrub, before rinsing them with fresh water. Lay the cleaned brushes, face-down on a towel and let them dry overnight.

6. Cleaning Your Shower Loofah Or Poof

Our loofahs and poofs can get very dirty with all the dirt, dead skin and oils that they absorb when we scrub ourselves clean with them. It is important that after every use, we rinse the loofahs or poofs well, shake the water out and hang them to dry. And at least once a week, soak them in a diluted solution of bleach and water for five minutes, before rinsing them with water and drying them.

7. Cleaning Your Metal Tools

You can clean your tweezers, eyelash curlers and nail-clippers by washing them down thoroughly with water and a strong soap, before patting them dry with a clean towel. After washing, you will need to sanitize them by wiping them with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol before allowing them to dry.
