Winter is coming. Have you made preparations to care for your skin and overall health? What about your home?
Preparing your home for the winter season is crucial as it makes you feel more comfortable, no matter how harsh the weather becomes. So, how do you make your home winter-ready?
Here are seven tips to prepare your home for the chilly winter season, that’s begun showing its fangs already!
1. Fix areas letting in unwanted air
The first thing you can do to make your home cozy for the upcoming cold season is to fix any spots letting in unwanted airflow. These are generally on the windows and doors. Spots such as gaps between the doors and windows and their frames, if left open, can make your winters worse. Make sure all the windows and doors and their frames are completely sealed, so you can enjoy the winter without having to bear the chills.
2. Switch to heavier curtains
Curtains play a significant role in making your home either warm or chilly. It may be time to bring down the lighter curtains you had hung during summers and rains, and replace them with heavier ones. These will cover the holes and cracks in the windows that may not have been fixed, and will keep the room warm by trapping the heat within. Also, choosing heavy curtains in dark tones is much better, as dark colors absorb and give off heat.
3. Layer up the floors
There is nothing more discomforting than stepping onto the hard, cold floor as you wake up and begin moving around the house during winters.
Laying soft and thick carpets on floors and especially around your bed is one of the best ways to make your home winter-ready. You could also use rugs if adding carpets is not a feasible option. Just make sure you lay the rugs in areas that you frequent.
4. Repair damp walls
Damp walls can make your home feel uncomfortably cold and distressing during winters. Plus, damp walls can make a room smell unpleasant, as there isn’t a whole lot of sunlight that comes into the house during the winter season. Call a professional to give your walls a fresh coat of paint in a bright shade. This will give your room a new look and also keep it dry and cozy.
5. Get cozy pillows and blankets
Binge-watching your favorite show with a warm blanket and a fluffy pillow for company – nothing can be more soothing on a chilling winter day.
Pick pillow covers in velvet or faux fur material in attractive designs that’ll give you comfort as well as add a zing to your home décor.
6. Create a separate space for leisure
Come winters, and you crave for some me-time tucked in your favorite blanket, with your favorite book/songs/movies, and your favorite beverage. Create for yourself such a space to forget the world and the cold (if you don’t have one already). It could be in the corner of your bedroom, on your bed, or on the balcony. Choose your spot and ready it for those precious escape-from-the-winter-cold-and-blues moments.
7. Let in some sunshine
You should keep the curtains closed when the sun goes down. But during the day, open up the windows and let the sun’s rays bathe the room in natural warmth. Place mirrors near the window to double the sunshine. Even if some rooms in your home do not receive direct sunlight, keeping the windows wide open and adding a mirror is sufficient to keep the nipping cold at bay during the day.
