For most city dwellers, a balcony is one refuge that they can escape into, breathe in some fresh air, and relax in – without having to step out of their homes.
Let’s look at a few creative ideas to transform this sacred space into one that you’ll want to retreat to again and again!
1. Bring The Outdoors Home
Change your dull balcony into a haven to relax in, by using plenty of plants. You will want to plan the number of plants that you want to keep depending on the size of your balcony. You will need to factor in some space for a seating arrangement as well. You might also want to consider which plants will thrive well in the amount of sunshine your balcony allows. Last but not the least, you will need to decide on the number of pots you’ll want on the floor, and/or if you want a vertical garden that saves space.
2. Make The Most Of The Space
If your balcony has a railing, it may be a good idea to invest in hanging flower boxes to create more space for your plants. You can also think of creating a shelf on one end of the balcony to house all the pots in, to create more space to move about and sit in.
3. Outdoor Rugs
There’s nothing like a couple of rugs, strategically placed, to define the seating area in your balcony. You might want to decide on what kind of rugs you want to use, depending on the weather conditions and your balcony design. You can even opt for a turf rug or an artificial green carpet (that looks almost real!), to add to the greenery in your balcony.
4. The Seating
Seating is an important consideration when planning the décor of your balcony. It’s a good idea to place a small table and two chairs, for you to enjoy a steaming mug of your morning coffee while enjoying the great outdoors in the privacy of your home.
You can choose the kind of seating you would like depending on the size of your balcony. If you have limited space, you may want to opt for foldable furniture that can be put away when not in use. And if space isn’t a concern, you can even go all out and opt for a small rattan (think weatherproof) love seat or sofa.
5. Cushions And Pillows
Up the coziness quotient of your balcony by using a variety of pillows and cushions. And the best part of using cushions and pillows is the number of colors and textures that you can play with and add to the setting. Don’t be afraid to make a bold statement with different sizes, colors, and textures and transform your simple balcony into a vibrant and welcoming space.
6. Design Elements
You can choose to add garden accessories like statues, lanterns, and designer pots and make your space even more beautiful.
7. Adequate Lighting
The right lighting can spruce up your balcony area like little else. If you desire to spend late evenings and nights lounging in your balcony area, then you will need to plan to have adequate lighting in the space. The kind of lighting you use will depend on the mood you want to create. You can choose from a wide variety of lights right from hanging fairy lights to intricate candle lanterns. And if you plan to read in your balcony area, you may need a stronger source of light.
