8 Bedroom Design Mistakes To Avoid

Last updated on June 22nd, 2022

Just because a bedroom happens to be a personal space that isn’t really on display, we end up giving little attention to its design.

But your bedroom is the one spot in the house where you spend one-third of your life! How about giving it the attention it deserves? Here’s a list of 8 of the most common bedroom mistakes to steer clear of!

1. Using the wrong bedside table

It’s important to choose bedside tables that are of an appropriate height, not just for esthetics, but also to make them functional. While a table that is too high compared to the bed and mattress can look odd, a table lower than the top of the mattress can be pretty inconvenient to use, especially when you reach out for that sip of water in the middle of the night.

2. Poor lighting

You need to ensure that the lighting that you choose for your bedroom is layered, and has multiple options. It should have both adjustable ambient lighting and task lighting with a movable arm for your nighttime reading. It’s also a good idea to ensure that you can turn off the lights without having to get out of bed.

3. Rugs on the wrong spot

Even the most stylish of bedrooms have this one flaw more often than not. A wrongly placed rug, at the foot of the bed. The rug’s purpose is to help you land on your feet softly. How about moving it so that it is beside the bed and is the first thing that your feet touch every morning when you wake up?

4. A cheap bed

You may be trying to save some money on your bedroom design, but don’t do it at the cost of your back. A cheap bed and mattress are the perfect recipe for bad back health. The amount and quality of your sleep will also get compromised if you opt for a cheap bed and a poor-quality mattress.

5. Ad-hoc arrangements for gadgets

It’s a bad idea to sleep with your smartphones and other gadgetry within your reach. Buy an alarm clock and designate a space away from your bed to keep your phone(s) and accessories in.

6. Designing it only for sleeping

Your bedroom doesn’t have to be a place meant only for sleeping. If space permits, how about adding a cozy nook with a wing chair to curl up on with a favorite book?

7. Giving it no personality

You might want to do your bedroom in neutral and subtle shades, but an accent wall in a slightly bold color of your choice will lend it some character and spruce the place up. You can even add a pop of color to your bedroom with patterned bed linen. The idea is to strike the right balance between beautiful and cozy.

8. Using the wrong curtains

The curtains of your bedroom will need to be just right to give you privacy and block out outside light to help you sleep comfortably. Let them be the perfect finishing touch to your stunning yet cozy bedroom.

Happy decorating, everyone!
