Hosting a New year’s party has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that you don’t need to wait in a long taxi queue, or even pay a hefty fare to return home. The disadvantage, however, is that you’ll be solely in charge of cleaning up the after-party mess.
But don’t let that thought deter you from throwing a New Year bash! Just by planning a little ahead of time, and following a clean-up checklist, you can have the house looking as good as new in no time. So, here it is. Your New Year party clean-up checklist!
1. The Pre-party Prep
Make your after-party clean-up easy by preparing for it, beforehand. First off, close the doors of the rooms you don’t want guests to have access to and move fragile items to a safe spot.
Since it’s a party, spills are meant to happen. So, consider keeping paper towels handy, and dustbins nearby to address any emergency. Additionally, designate separate zones for food and drinks to avoid spillage.
2. Clear the obvious mess first

While cleaning the post-party mess, you are likely to find items like empty bottles, uneaten food, cans and other disposables lying around. Pack away the salvageable food and drinks into the refrigerator and toss away any unwanted extras. Also, while cleaning, keep an eye out for recyclable items and put them away separately for a possible future DIY project. Also, don’t forget to vacuum clean all upholstery, cushions, and rugs.
3. Clean out surfaces and stains
Now that you’ve cleared away the visible clutter, it is time to tackle the invisible. Take a microfiber cloth and an all-purpose cleaner and start going through your house, addressing one room at a time. Clean all the surfaces to ensure there’s isn’t any sticky residue left from food or drinks. In case you don’t want to use a store-bought cleaner, consider stirring up a homemade all-purpose cleaner with baking soda and vinegar.
4. Get the house in order
Once you’ve cleared your house of party debris, it is time to tidy up your home. Go through each room and identify items that have been moved around or left out (for instance, put the cushions lying on the floor in place). Here, the idea is to get your house back in shape, post the party frenzy.
5. Clean the bathroom
Once you have cleaned your home, you need to address the mess that awaits you in the bathroom. Clean the area as you usually would – starting from cleaning the countertops to scrubbing the toilet bowl. Also, don’t forget to swap out the used towels!
