Few things in life give us as much joy as shifting into a new home. But when your home is temporary, it can put a spanner in the works, restricting your creativity. But hey, the word “temporary” doesn’t mean you make do with what the flat owner has handed you.
You can still stamp your identity in your temporary home with a few tweaks. If interior design is not your thing, you will probably wonder how you are going to have your cake and eat it too. It’s not as difficult as it sounds. Take a deep dive with us and check out how to not only eat the cake but add a cream topping too!
1. A splash of paint
Color is exuberant and joyful. Just the thing you need to breathe life into a rented home. Picking a color from the shade card is a cinch. However, if you want to take your look up a notch, think it through before you begin. Check out the existing furniture or the stuff you have brought along with you. Match the colors and try to come up with a palette that fits the bill. This will give your home the designer touch.
Tip: You may need to take your landlord’s permission before you begin.
2. Arranging your furniture
Furniture lined up against the wall can mar a beautiful space. A proper furniture arrangement can change the look of your home drastically. To get it right, zero in on the accent wall and work a seating arrangement around it. A couch and a couple of easy chairs should suffice. And don’t forget to place a couple of lampshades, a comfortable coffee table and end tables to make your space more cozy and inviting.

3. Reupholster the furniture
A couch that has seen better days is not going to be the ideal match for your freshly painted walls. Give your sofas a revamp with some foam and new fabric for a brand-new look. A coat of polish on the wooden surfaces will add to the appeal.
Tip: Again, you may need permission from your landlord if the sofa came with the home. However, it’s a win-win for them, so there should not be much of a problem.
4. Get classy bed linen
It’s like waving a magic wand. Stylish bed linen and duvets can transform a mundane bedroom into a designer space. Make sure to color co-ordinate the purchases for better impact. Add plump new pillows and cushions to the bed to complete this gorgeous look.
Tip: Your new bed linen isn’t going to cut it if you don’t make the bed properly. So don’t rush it.
5. Style it with accessories
It’s tempting to jump the gun and pick up lamps, cushions, and artwork when you rent your space. However, it’s best to wait before you have the basics in place. That way you know exactly what you need and how much. Stick to the color palette when you shop for cushions, rugs, or artwork for a cohesive look.
Tip: Accessorizing may seem like a simple affair. After all, throwing a few cushions on the sofa isn’t rocket science. However, when you give it a bit of thought, you can take your decor to the next level. For tips on accessorizing, check out this link.
